Protect yourself and your card

What is credit card fraud?

Fraud with cards refers to any kind of misdemeanor or felony in which someone obtains and uses someone else’s card or confidential information (name, card number, bank account information), without authorization. When that information is used with illegal intentions.
To avoid fraudulent use of your card, here are a few steps you can take:

  • Sign your new cards as soon as they arrive.
  • Keep your card and PIN numbers in a safe and confidential place.
  • Review your cards sporadically to make sure none is missing.
  • Destroy and discard any receipts, air tickets, trip itineraries, or anything that has your credit card number on it.
  • Memorize your PIN number.
  • Check companies you are not familiar with by calling the National Consumer Commission (www.consumo.go.cr), or the Financial Entities Superintendence (SUGEF, www.sugef.fi.cr).
  • Don’t provide information to people you don’t feel comfortable with.
  • NEVER provide the password you use to your online banking or internet server.
  • Don’t provide your account information unless you are purchasing something using that account.

Credit and debit card fraud is a felony that makes us vulnerable, and can affect our credit. When you know what it is and how it is done, it is easier to protect ourselves.
